The term “bondservant” often connotes a person who is forcibly made the personal property of someone else. However, the ancient Mosaic law, as documented in the Torah, describes a different scenario. It portrays a bondservant as someone who voluntarily chooses to serve a master they trust for his goodness (Exodus 21:5-6).
We would love to believe that we are free people who have never been enslaved. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. We are slaves to whatever has mastery over us—addictions, performance, pride, reputation, fame, wealth, pleasures, and so on. But when you realize the goodness of God and humble yourself to be His bondservant, you will experience the true freedom of walking with Christ. As it is written, “If the Son sets you free, you are free indeed.” (John 8:36)
