Why did Levi, the tax collector, leave his privileged position to follow Jesus in an instant? In those days, tax collectors were wealthy and enjoyed the favor of the powerful Roman Empire they worked for. However, they had to lose their soul in the process, as they made a living out of injustice. Levi had everything that a person could want, but he lacked peace because his heart was disconnected from God. He had the world at his feet, but his heart was empty.
What do you desire today: the riches and fame of this world or the joy and peace that Christ offers? Are you willing to say goodbye to those carnal pleasures you once enjoyed in order to experience the greater joys in Christ? Are you prepared to follow Him, whatever the cost?
