“Do not lie to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices.” – Colossians 3:9

Why do we lie? Often, it springs from our fears and desires. We lie either to avoid the consequences of our wrongdoing or to gain an unfair advantage. At its core, lying is a tool we use to preserve, promote, and protect our selfish nature and its desires.

Lying undermines trust—a fragile foundation that, once broken, can irreparably harm relationships. Honesty, though challenging, is a virtue worth pursuing. Even when telling the truth brings discomfort, pain, or temporary setbacks, it strengthens character and fosters deeper, more meaningful connections.

Lying ceases when we hold our relationships with God and others in high regard. If you find yourself grappling with habitual lying, you desperately need God’s help. He is more than able to empower you and keep you from falling.
