“Still other seed fell on good soil, where it sprouted, grew up, and produced a crop…” – Mark 4:8

In Jesus’ parable of the Sower, the four types of soil represent the different ways our hearts respond to God’s Word. Three of them—the hardened path, the rocky ground, and the thorn-infested soil—symbolize the hardened heart, the shallow heart, and the distracted heart. None of these produce lasting fruit. Only the good soil receives the seed fully, allowing it to take root, grow, and bear a harvest.

So what makes a heart like good soil? It begins with removing hardness, shallowness, and worldly distractions. A fruitful heart is tender to God’s voice, deeply rooted in His truth, and free from the pull of competing desires. When my heart is fully devoted to God—soft, deep, and undivided—it becomes fertile ground where His Word can thrive. In every season, such a heart will bear fruit that brings glory to Him.
