God’s Word reminds us that not all words or actions carry the same weight. Some hurt for a moment yet heal for a lifetime, while others feel sweet but hide destruction. Scripture gives us clear examples. When Paul openly corrected Peter for his treatment of Gentile believers, Peter received it humbly. Their bond was not broken; instead, it grew stronger, with Peter later affirming Paul’s writings. Contrast this with Judas, whose kiss of betrayal delivered Jesus into the hands of His enemies.
We often prefer compliments over correction, yet true love sometimes comes clothed in rebuke. A friend who wounds us with truth does so to strengthen our walk with God, while an enemy flatters to deceive and destroy. May we ask God for discernment to recognise the difference. Remember: faithful wounds refine us, but deceitful kisses can ruin us.
