“Whoever turns his ear away from hearing the law, even his prayer is detestable.” – Proverbs 28:9

This proverb reminds us of a sobering truth: if we refuse to listen to God’s commands, why should we expect Him to listen to our prayers? Prayer is not a way to bypass obedience. God desires a heart that seeks Him, not one that wilfully rejects His Word yet expects His blessings.

When we ignore His laws, we cut ourselves off from His fellowship. It is not that God has lost power or interest, but our sin creates a barrier between us and Him. The good news is that through Christ, forgiveness is offered. In Him, we are clothed with righteousness, and a desire to please God. When we walk in obedience, God delights to hear us. As James reminds us, the prayer of a righteous person has great power to prevail (James 5:16). When you listen to God, He will listen to you.
