As crowds gathered around Jesus, He spoke a parable about a Sower whose seeds fell on different types of soil—each representing the hearts of those who hear God’s Word. Some seeds fell along the path, but the ground was too hard for the seeds to penetrate. Birds quickly devoured them. Jesus explained that these seeds symbolized people with hardened hearts. Though they hear the Word, they fail to understand it, and the enemy snatches it away before it can take hold.
A heart becomes hardened in many ways—through unbelief that questions God’s goodness, through the pain and injustice of life that breeds bitterness, or through sin that deceives and numbs us to God’s truth. But there’s hope. Scripture reminds us that God is near to the broken-hearted. When we come to Him in humility, He can soften even the hardest heart. Today, ask God to till the soil of your soul so His Word may bear lasting fruit.
