In Luke 5:1–11, we gain insight into the background of Jesus calling His first disciples. Guided by Jesus, these soon-to-be disciples experienced the greatest catch of fish in their entire fishing careers—enough to catapult them into fishing stardom. Yet, when Jesus called them to leave everything and follow Him, they didn’t hesitate. They recognized that the privilege of being with Jesus far outweighed the wealth and recognition the world could offer.
Everything we have is a gift from God—our abilities, strength, wealth, and resources are all expressions of His grace. Yet, these very blessings can become obstacles in our pursuit of Him when we begin to treasure them more than God Himself. If He were to ask you to surrender something you deeply value, would you be willing to let it go? Sometimes, embracing God’s greater purpose requires laying aside what we have elevated in our own lives.
