Many thought Jim Elliot’s decision to go to the jungles of Ecuador to share Jesus with a violent tribe was foolish. But Jim’s famous words ring true: “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” Though he was killed young, his sacrifice helped transform and save that very tribe.
In our desire for self-preservation, we often act selfishly, trampling others, pushing our own agenda, and ignoring God’s command to treat others as we want to be treated. But following Christ means dying to our selfish ways and living for Him and His gospel. No matter how hard you try to hold on to your life, you will lose it. But when you surrender it to Jesus, you will gain abundant life—both here on earth and for all eternity.
