When Jesus first foretold His coming death, it came as a shock to His disciples. This was not the glorious future they had imagined for their beloved Master—or for themselves. Peter, ever the outspoken leader, voiced his dismay. But Jesus rebuked him, because though Peter’s intentions seemed loving, they were contrary to God’s divine plan and revealed their worldly origin.
Like Peter, we can have an affection for Jesus but have worldly ideas that cloud our understanding of God’s will. When we act in the flesh—no matter how sincere our intentions—we risk becoming a stumbling block to the very work of God. May our love for the Lord be expressed not just in passion, but in humble submission. Let us seek His will above our own and ask for the grace and strength to walk in it. May our prayer always be, “Not my will, but Yours be done.”
