“She has done what she could to anoint My body in advance of My burial.” – Mark 14:8

aug 6

In the shadow of betrayal and the schemes of the religious leaders, we see a shining act of love—Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, anointing Jesus with costly perfume. Her devotion stood in stark contrast to Judas’s treachery and the hostility of the authorities. While others criticized her, Jesus commended her. Unknowingly, Mary, Judas, and the religious leaders were all participants in God’s redemptive plan. Judas and the authorities would face judgment, but Mary’s devotion became a lasting testimony of love.

Life is full of choices. We can live for self or offer our lives in worship to Christ. But whatever we do, God’s sovereign purpose will always prevail, as Proverbs 19:21 reminds us. Yet, our actions carry lasting consequences. Like Mary, may we choose devotion over self-interest, that we may delight in the glory of God rather than the temporary satisfactions of the flesh.
