The Bible speaks of three beginnings. The first, in chronological order, is found in John 1:1, which refers to a beginning beyond time, space, and matter. It points to the eternal existence of the Triune God. The second beginning is mentioned in Genesis 1:1. This marks the beginning of creation—when God created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them.
In Mark 1:1, we encounter the third beginning: the moment when Christ eternal stepped into creation. He emptied Himself of His eternal glory to take on the form of a man and dwell among us, revealing His steadfast love through His life, death, and resurrection. This was the beginning of the gospel: a new and exciting chapter in humanity’s relationship with God, one foretold by the prophets, centuries earlier. This gospel is the good news that God personally cares for you and has gone to the greatest possible extent to make you His own.
